One of the nicest things about Sun City West is how many people keep an eye out for one another. When you head north each spring, several of them will be watching your house in one way or another. It helps to know who covers which part, so nothing falls through the gap between them.
The Sheriff's Posse of Sun City West is a volunteer group working with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. Its Vacation Watch is free to residents who will be gone at least a week. Members drive out in marked cars soon after you leave and then about every two weeks, and they look over the doors, windows, and irrigation outside. If they find a problem, they call the local key holder you name. The Posse asks for your signature card at least seven days before you leave, so send it in early.
A neighbor who is home for the summer can notice a strange car, pick up a stray package, and be your eyes if a storm comes through. That is a real kindness. What most neighbors cannot do, and should not be asked to do, is go inside every week, run the water, read the breaker panel, and keep a record of it all.
In a way, the whole street is. Most Sun City West homes fall under the community CC&Rs, handled by the CC&R department at the R.H. Johnson Recreation Center, and enforcement usually begins with a written complaint from a neighbor. Weeds after a monsoon or a trash can left in view are the usual culprits, so arrange landscaping before you leave.
Inside. None of the others open your front door, and the inside is where the costly trouble starts. It might be an air conditioner that quits, a leak at the water heater, or a drain trap gone dry.
